After a lengthy tease, Motorola has announced its Moto 360 Sport will be available January 7 for $299.

Along with the fitness-focused construction, Motorola is pitching this as the smartwatch for those who want their wearable to free them from their phone.

That’s because it incorporates fitness-focused features like GPS and an “any light hybrid display” for better visibility in sunlight. Of course, as with every Android Wear watch, the Moto 360 Sport also stores music. You can then head out for a run and leave the phone at home or throw it in the glove compartment of the car before going into the gym.

The Sport is more rugged, with a silicone build and sports band. This model doesn’t include the same type of customization as the flagship Moto 360 - instead you’re limited to black, white, and orange models.

The Moto 360 Sport will be available directly from Motorola or other retailers in January for $299, but it's launching mid-December in the UK and France.

Why this matters: The second-gen Moto 360 is one of the better watches out there, but it’s probably a little too nice for serious workouts. The sport option may be better suited for those who want something that does more than a Fitbit, but also can take a beating. Also, the hybrid display may solve the major pain point of smartwatches: difficulty seeing the face in direct sunlight.
