Names for Nothing: So it's official: You've decided to claim the domain name www.LegalizeFerretsNow.com for your new site. Until recently, you'd have needed to pony up a registration fee (usually $70) to make it your own. But now a trio of competing sites--DomainZero.com, NameDemo.com, and Namezero.com--will register any available domain name for free. But NameDemo and Namezero place ads on your site, and DomainZero makes you accept e-mailed "promotional offerings" from 18 (!) sources... That's Mister Spam Victim to You: Lately I've been besieged by a new breed of spam: Messages with subject lines that jauntily address me by name, as if they were from a buddy. ("Harry, Check out these auctions from Egghead.com!") The goal, presumably, is to get me to take a second look before I reflexively drag them into my trash folder. (It works.) Among the offending dot-coms: ECircles, Egghead, and Quickdot.
