Ceiva

An Internet-connected picture frame may seem like an extravagance, but plug it in for a few minutes and count the number of times it makes you smile.

A $249 Internet-connected digital picture frame might sound like an extravagant novelty, but let it run on your desk for a few minutes, and count how many times it makes you smile.

The Ceiva is as simple as it is attractive: Use the supplied telephone-line coupler to attach its built-in 56-kbps modem to your phone line; then push one of its two buttons, and the slide show begins (after you register at the company's Web site on your PC and download your first batch of Ceiva-supplied pictures, that is). Press the other button to stop on a single slide. If you want to display your own photos, you can upload them to the Ceiva site, then download them to the picture frame. Or you can download images uploaded by other Ceiva Logic customers you designate, once you receive their permission.

If pictures aren't your thing, you can sign up for one of the service's four channels: weather, comics, horoscope, and lottery results. But to make the most of this eye-catching extravagance, let it bring images of your favorite people, places, and things into your home or office.

What's hot: An ever-changing slide show of your choosing delivered automatically to your office, den, living room, or elsewhere.

What's not: You have to go online to set slide-show times; price makes it a costly (albeit cute) office or home decoration.

Geek factor: Low
