Zip Drive Death Click Is for Real

Money 98 in a State

I knew Money 98 had some problems, but I didn't expect to encounter more than 100 Microsoft Knowledge Base documents describing irritating glitches and work-arounds. Among them:

  • The program is incompatible with CyberMedia's First Aid, Network Associates' PC Medic, Quarterdeck WinProbe95's Crashshield, and Symantec's Norton Crash Guard.

  • Tax Worksheet miscalculates tax liability and may apply the maximum capital gains rate even when there is a capital loss.

  • Addresses are printed incorrectly on checks after a data file is converted from a previous version.

  • The Bill Reminder icon doesn't show up in Windows' system tray, even if you have transactions due.

  • The Monthly Report displays inaccurate investment gain and loss percentages.

  • Bills managed by the Debt Reduction Planner don't show up in the upcoming-bills list or in the Bill Reminder.

  • The program may not find checks that need to be printed, or it may report that checks need to be printed when none do.

An 82KB patch available at support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/mspfctlx.exe corrects Money's clashes with third-party utilities. A 128KB patch fixes the check-printing problem; for installation instructions and a link to the patch, see Knowledge Base article number Q179667 at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q179/6/67.asp. Finally, if you've had it with the product tour that runs every time you launch Money 98, get the 75KB utility that shuts it off at support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/touroff.exe.
