Upgrade Guide

Faster and faster: installing a new 56-kbps modem, step-by-step.

Step 2: Find an ISP

Your existing ISP may offer support for x2, K56flex, or the new v.90 international standard--or it may support some combination of the three. Check the provider's Web page, send e-mail, or call its technical support. Also check whether the ISP offers a local telephone number to access 56-kbps services.

If your provider doesn't support 56-kbps operation, check out the ISP finders at www.3com.com/56k/need4_56k/connectnow.html and www.k56flex.com/isprt.html to find one that does. Note, however, that these lists are not always completely accurate.

It's also a good idea to download the latest version of Microsoft's Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95 ( www.microsoft.com/Windows95/info/dialup.htm).
