When i reviewed the first PalmPilot PDA, I dubbed it the Road Warrior's Roamin' Emperor. I wasn't the only one who pocketed the Pilot: 3Com has sold more than a million of these 6-ounce electronic organizers (good news for Pilot fans, since 3Com's leading market share means software developers continue to release applets). This month, 3Com will ship the Palm III with 2MB of RAM. After reviewing a preproduction unit, I say, "All hail the new emperor!"
Attracted by the PalmPilot's success in this formerly moribund market, numerous companies have done knockoffs. Among the pretenders: a bevy of new Windows CE 2.0 devices that Microsoft not-so-subtly calls Palm PCs. The Palm PCs are not terrible, but they are more complicated to set up and use than the PalmPilots. And judging by the improvements in the $399 Palm III, I think this is the one you'll want to take into daily battle.
