PC Users Stay on the Sideline While Microsoft and the DOJ Fight It Out
Lawsuits filed by the Justice Department and 20 state attorneys general appear to be too little, too late to stop Windows 98. But the first casualty of the Fed's aggressive antitrust campaign against Microsoft could be NT 5.0.
The legal fireworks between Microsoft and a coalition of state and federal regulators are great fun to watch, but they won't have much effect on the average PC user. At least not in the short run.
By the time you read this, thousands of copies of Windows 98 will likely have been shipped to retailers and installed on soon-to-ship computers. At press time it appeared certain that the courts would not stop the new operating system from being sold on June 25 as Microsoft promised.
