Top Gun: Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus Deluxe

Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus Deluxe

A new version of Dr Solomon's has made me update my antivirus prescription.

In previous PC World tests, Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus software always did well at virus detection and removal but fell short on features. Now, with the $60 Anti-Virus Deluxe for Windows 95 and NT, Dr Solomon's has surpassed its main competitor, Norton's $50 AntiVirus 4.0. I tested a shipping copy.

Anti-Virus Deluxe does a good job of rooting out known viruses and viruslike behavior. The basic package works continuously in the background, watching for viruses as you access individual files. A new built-in scheduler lets you choose when and how often to perform a complete scan.

Because new viruses appear regularly, updating virus "signature" files is essential. Previously, Dr Solomon's software included a free update for only one month; Deluxe now includes a full year of free updates. The company offers weekly updates of program and signature files via the Internet. Use the program's scheduler to download and install updates automatically.

Deluxe also includes NetGuard, which acts as a virus firewall, isolating downloaded Internet files and e-mail attachments in a protected holding area until they're checked for viruses. Clean files become available immediately; tainted ones undergo the program's disinfection process.

To round out the upgrade, Anti-Virus Deluxe now sports an improved interface that makes customizing easier.
