Top 20 Budget Desktops

Older systems of 300 MHz or more dominate the budget list. Gateway's $2125 G6-300b steals the top spot, thanks to a 17-inch monitor, 8.4GB drive, and terrific performance.

The budget desktops chart continues to bulk up on PCs emigrating from the power list, with four systems making the switchover after steep price cuts. The new $2125 Gateway G6-300b steals the top spot with a 17-inch monitor, 8.4GB hard disk, and terrific PC WorldBench 98 score of 173. The $1349 Micro Express MicroFlex-B833--also new--features a Pentium II-233 CPU and 64MB of RAM. As Intel cuts prices, rival chips are becoming scarce. Only the Micro Express MicroFlex-B2450 and Polywell Poly K6266Mx use non-Intel CPUs. Two Pentium MMX systems missed the charts: the $999 Seanix Baby Grand-CS and $1184 Acer AcerPower Flex4000. Both have small hard disks and run too slowly.
