Intuit & Peachtree: Newest for Small Business

QuickBooks Pro 6.0 and Peachtree Office Accounting

  

Don't hit your books just yet: Intuit and Peachtree have come out with more flexible accounting packages for your small business. I examined beta versions of QuickBooks Pro 6.0, Intuit's first multiuser version, and Peachtree Office Accounting, which makes importing and exporting in Word and Excel formats easy.

QuickBooks has long been popular among small businesses, but it hasn't (until now) simplified data-sharing among employees. QuickBooks Pro 6.0 lets up to five users access accounting data over a network simultaneously, given that each has a copy of the program. Only one person can change a particular piece of information, such as an invoice, at any one time, though others can view it.

The setup wizard assigns each user a security clearance--to prevent, for example, peeking at payroll records. QuickBooks Pro 6.0 also has time and billing, estimating, and job-costing features.

Both the $219 QuickBooks Pro 6.0 and its $119 sibling, QuickBooks 6.0, link to useful Internet resources, such as tools for finding the best loans and credit.

QuickBooks remains easy to use. New multimedia videos explain the numerous accounting procedures. Some people like the more structured approach of BestWare's MYOB Premiere Accounting. But if you already use QuickBooks or Quicken, QuickBooks Pro 6.0 is hard to beat.
