Corel to Bundle Netscape Communicator in New Suite

WordPerfect Suite 8 will offer new interface, tight integration.

Corel and Netscape Communications announced plans yesterday to jointly integrate Netscape Communicator into Corel%squots WordPerfect Suite 8 and Office Professional 8 application suites. The new Corel products will ship later this year. A preproduction version of WordPerfect Suite 8 may arrive before this spring.

Communicator is Netscape%squots upcoming integrated suite of client software for e-mail, groupware, and Web browsing: With this product inside the Corel suite, youll be able to perform tasks such as e-mail and Web browsing without leaving the suite applications. Corel will also give its applications a facelift, so that the interfaces look a bit like Netscapes.

The move to include the Netscape Communicator package helps Corels product compete against the new Microsoft Office 97 suite, which provides similar functionality. Corels announcement is a bit of a pre-emptive strike: Microsoft plans a formal launch for Office 97 in New York this Thursday.

Microsoft controls todays applications suite market, but Corels WordPerfect Suite 7 has been selling strongly for months, thanks to a highly competitive upgrade price: $99 for owners of most popular word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, or suite applications. The Microsoft Office 97 suite costs $209 for a competitive upgrade or almost $500 full price.
