Microsoft Launches Improved NetMeeting 2.0 Beta

Microsoft has released the fourth beta version of its NetMeeting 2.0 conferencing software, boasting real-time video streaming and a new, more user-friendly interface for Windows 95 and NT 4.0 users.

Due to ship by the end of April, NetMeeting also will be bundled into Internet Explorer 4.0, which Microsoft plans to ship later in the spring.

NetMeeting 2.0%squots features include user adjustments for video quality; support for MMX technology (which Microsoft promises will lower CPU use and improve video quality), and integration with Outlook and Microsoft Exchange mail clients.

An enhanced user interface lets you easily log calls, access speed-dial entries, and see who else is online, the company said. A %dquotwhisper%dquot mode enables private conversations. One user can send text messages to others in a meeting, but other conferees can%squott see the note.

The beta 4 release of NetMeeting 2.0, posted yesterday, is now available for free download from Microsoft%squots Web site.
