MMX on the Cheap: Dell Launches Dimension M Series

New desktop PCs are affordable and speedy.

Wave good-bye to the Dell Dimension P series, it%squots time for the divine Dimension M. In its new cast of Pentium MMX desktops, Dell has included two entry-level business machines targeted at small to medium-size companies: the M166a and the M200a. Considering the competitive street prices of $1999 and $2179, our advice is to take your pick.

There%squots nothing stylish about the Dimension M systems. They resemble their former Dimension siblings: plain, off-white workhorses. You won%squott find anything fancy about the M166a or M200a inside, either. Each machine comes with a modest 16MB of RAM, 2.1GB hard drive, a 33.6-kbps telephony modem, and a 15-inch monitor. One notable limitation: The units accommodate only 64MB of memory. Nearly all of today%squots PCs can hold 128MB or more.

These MMX units integrate the standard variety of multimedia extras: S3 Virge-DX video (with 2MB of DRAM), a Sound Blaster 16 Vibra sound card, ACS 90 speakers, and a 12X CD-ROM drive. Dell preinstalls Windows 95 and Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition (consisting of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, Small Business Financial Manager, and Internet Explorer).

But performance isn%squott standard: A preproduction version of the Dimension M200a raced through our PC WorldBench test suite. In fact, this machine was not significantly slower than some MMX-200 machines with 32MB of RAM.
