Compaq Launches New Line of Notebooks
Gigahertz barrier crumbles as Pentium III processors go mobile.
Compaq Computer launched a new series of high-end Presario notebook computers Monday for consumers, and it promises to deliver by April improved capabilities for its Armada notebooks, which are aimed at businesses.
The Presario 1800 has Intel Pentium III processors of up to 1 GHz in customer-configured models. Standard retail models come with a 700-MHz Pentium III processor, a 20GB hard drive, 128MB of memory, a DVD-ROM drive, and ethernet capability for $2199.
Compaq also says it will improve processor speed and accessories for its Armada E500 and M700 series business notebooks. Armada E500 models will be equipped with 1-GHz processors and will come with optional 30GB hard drives as well as DVD-ROM or CD-RW drives. The Armada M700 will have a Pentium III 1-GHz processor with Intel's SpeedStep feature for mobile computers.
Compaq says it expects to ship the new Armada E500 and Armada M700 models in early April.
A host of other major computer makers are also planning to use the new high speed chip in mobile computers.
