Sony Unveils Portable CD-RW Drive
New $399 battery-operated device doubles as a stand-alone CD player.
Sony Electronics is making the move toward mobile CD-Rewritable drives.
On Monday the hardware manufacturer announced it is now shipping a new portable CD-RW drive that is available in retail shops in the United States. The drive is also available on online shopping sites such as SonyStyle.com, the San Jose, California-based company says in a statement. The drive costs around $399 and comes with a one-year warranty.
Called the CRX10U/A2, the new CD-RW drive is a member of Sony's Digital Relay product suite. The drive is battery-operated, Sony says.
When attached to a computer, the drive can be used for backing up a user's system, recording digital images, and creating music CDs. When detached from a computer, the drive can function as a stand-alone CD player, Sony says.
The Digital Relay drive is bundled with software for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. It also comes bundled with earphones and a wired remote control with an LCD screen, Sony says.
The drive weighs 12 ounces without the battery. The battery weighs 3.4 ounces and lasts 2 hours when recording at 4X speed, Sony says.
