Sharp Offers Wireless E-Mail, Web Access for Zaurus

Palmtop maker offers leasing program for two-way messaging on the go.

Oh sure, you%squotre wired. There%squots a smart phone in your bathroom. You have a nationwide pager, a laptop modem and FM radio head phones. But here%squots another gadget no uber roamer should be without. Sharp just announced a two-way wireless messaging service for its Zaurus ZR-5800 palmtop.

With this service, you can send and receive e-mail and messages from your palmtop without a phone line. Your Motorola modem will pick up e-mail over the nationwide ARDIS network even when it%squots not plugged into the Zaurus. The RadioMail interface supports faxing and offers news, sports, and stock quotes as well as text-only Web access.

You can buy the ZR-5800 for $499 and the Motorola Personal Messenger 100D modem for $449. Then add $33.95 a month for the entry ARDIS network plan with 20K of messages a month. For users who already have a Zaurus, ARDIS offers a 100K-per-month plan with modem for $69.95. According to Sharp, a short e-mail message runs about 1K.

To help mobile professionals and gizmo enthusiasts avoid sticker shock, Sharp will lease the palmtop, modem, and two-way messaging service for three years starting at $79.95 per month. That includes 20K of messaging a month. There is no roaming charge for using the network.
