WHAT'S HOT: The FS-3800N is almost identical to the FS-1800N, but it has a faster processor and prints text and graphics faster than any other printer in our review--at 14.2 pages per minute and 5.2 ppm, respectively. Plus the FS-3800N shares the 1800N's low total cost of ownership.

WHAT'S NOT: Print quality, merely middling on the FS-1800N, looks significantly worse on the FS-3800N. Text looks smudged and dirty, which is unusual for a monochrome laser, and gray-scale graphics are dotted and dark with significant banding. Also, this model costs a steep $1849, though its performance and consumables costs may make that less of a hurdle.

WHAT ELSE: The FS-3800N has the same extras as the FS-1800N, which include a slot for a 128MB flash memory card, three 500-sheet feeders for $299 each, a duplexer for $339, and a five-bin mailbox for $533.

BEST USE: The FS-3800N might fit where performance and long-term cost matter more than print quality or ease of use.
