Bell Atlantic to Bring Customers Up to Speed With ADSL Service
Flat-rate deal will be available in mid-1998.
The company will offer Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology and use software that overcomes ADSL%squots current distance limitations.
The software will allow the company to go beyond its current 10- to 12-kilometer distance barrier to reach more customers, said Tony Price, president of Bell Atlantic%squots InfoSpeed division.
Bell Atlantic will also make available ADSL customer premise equipment, which customers will either lease, rent, or buy, according to Price.
The ADSL service will be positioned as an upgrade for ISDN users, although it is not being pushed as a replacement.
%dquotSome customers will choose to stay with ISDN, based on their applications,%dquot Price said. %dquotADSL is optimized for high-speed Internet access and remote LAN access, at up to 6 megabits per second downstream.%dquot
%dquotWe expect both services to peacefully coexist,%dquot Price added.
Bell Atlantic%squots InfoSpeed is a full-service sales and support organization that works with users from the development stage through installation to follow-up support.
The company has not revealed a price for the service, but did say that it will offer a flat rate.
