Samsung ML-6060
Fast printing and a large main paper tray distinguish this monochrome laser printer.
WHAT'S HOT: Samsung just chopped $40 off the price of the ML-6060, bringing it down to $329. It has a capacious 550-sheet main paper tray and a 100-sheet auxiliary feed, and you can add a second 550-sheet tray for $199. The ML-6060's large paper capacity may prompt you to share it; an ethernet interface costs $179.
WHAT'S NOT: When the PC World Test Center retested the ML-6060 over USB, its text performance dropped a bit compared to its scores over a parallel connection. The new result of 9.2 ppm makes it one of the slower SOHO printers. (We did not test it over an ethernet LAN.)
The ML-6060 is the only SOHO monochrome laser printer to which PC World's panel of output judges assigns a Good rating instead of a Very Good score for text quality. Though clean and crisp, text looks somewhat light; very small typefaces tend to fade away, and curves and serifs lose their sharpness. Gray-scale graphics look even worse, showing a pronounced dot pattern.
WHAT ELSE: Samsung labels the control panel's lights and buttons with intelligible words instead of esoteric icons, but you'll still need the manual to interpret some error codes.
BEST USE: People who want a fast, easy-to-use laser printer and who don't need top print quality will like the ML-6060.
