Network Computers: Thin Clients Need Thin Servers

Cisco's Micro NC Server is designed to ease the load on network servers.

Cisco Systems plans to develop %dquotthin servers%dquot to work with network computers in its aim to deliver services locally that would otherwise bog down a main network, company officials said.

Cisco, in what it calls its Micro NC Server concept, envisions a specialized, single-purpose device that could be used at the workgroup level to boot up a number of NCs. Applets such as a spreadsheet or a word processor would reside on the thin server, while data would reside on traditional larger servers.

%dquotWhat we%squotre trying to avoid is a thousand people all downloading copies of Word and Excel and PowerPoint at once, which isn%squott a really good use of a large network,%dquot said Bob Michelet, director of corporate relations at Cisco. %dquotWhat we%squotre really planning here are devices to optimize the network, not to be full-fledged servers.%dquot

Cisco has been developing the thin-server idea with IBM, which announced a new NC development kit for manufacturers this week. Cisco expects to formally announce thin-server products based on IBM%squots PowerPC 403CGX chip in the fourth quarter of this year.
