Bottom Line

Solid performance and a low price make the StarForce 818 a good upgrade for gamers on a budget. Plus, it's cheaper than the comparable ELSA Gladiac MX and provides an S-Video-out.

MSI MS-StarForce 818 GeForce2 MX

WHAT'S HOT: For starters, MS-StarForce 818's $99 price makes it one of the least expensive boards on our chart. The StarForce's solid speed performance in our Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament tests puts this board on a par with other MX-based cards we've reviewed. And its image quality scores for Quake III and Unreal Tournament were actually higher than those of the more expensive ELSA Gladiac MX.

WHAT'S NOT: The absence of a gaming software bundle and lackluster image quality in our Test Drive 6 test drag this card down in overall value. Like the other MX boards we tested, the StarForce was unable to complete our Unreal Tournament and Test Drive 6 tests at 1600-by-1200-pixel resolution in 32-bit color.

WHAT ELSE: The StarForce 818 offers S-Video-out (TV-out) capability with the bundled S-Video cable. Several software extras--an MSI Utilities CD-ROM, a software DVD player, and the 3D Turbo 2000 utility for adjusting color, resolution, and refresh rate--round out the package.

BEST USE: Solid performance and a low price make this a good upgrade for gamers on a budget. Plus, it's $40 cheaper than the comparable ELSA Gladiac MX and gives you S-Video-out as well.
