Affordable Hi-Fi PC Sound Due From Cambridge SoundWorks, Creative Labs

High-fidelity, low price mark latest PC subwoofer and satellite stereo speaker system.

Cambridge SoundWorks is teaming up with Creative Labs, the developers of the SoundBlaster line of audio cards, to create a subwoofer and satellite stereo speaker system that will sell for about $120.

Due in August, the PC Works sound system is the first speaker set developed in cooperation with a line of PC sound cards, according to Tom DeVesto, president of Cambridge SoundWorks. Traditionally, sound-card developers have worked independently of speaker manufacturers. According to DeVesto, the cooperation between Creative Labs and Cambridge SoundWorks has allowed audio engineers to %dquotcontour the output to make up for any shortcomings of the speaker.%dquot

The result is superior sound quality, particularly for the price. A demo of an early production model at PC Expo revealed an amazingly powerful bass and clear tweeter that remained faithful even at high volumes. Each of the three-inch-square satellite speakers, as well as the subwoofer, has its own amplifier, so less audible bass distortion is segregated and doesn%squott influence tweeter response.

The PC Works sound system marks the low-end of computer speakers for Cambridge SoundWorks, which already sells two other subwoofer/satellite systems, the SoundWorks and MicroWorks lines, that start at about $225. Creative Labs plans to bundle the Cambridge SoundWorks PC Works speakers in the majority of its upgrade and audio kits starting late this summer.
