Most Promising Web Newcomer

Reality: We all knew the era of free shipping and below-cost pricing couldn't last. These days it seems more Web companies are shutting down than starting up. And while we'll miss the plentiful giveaways, amazing prices, and crazy promotions, we can't help thinking that the Web needed this reality check.

The events of this past year signaled a welcome return to the world where businesses try to make money, funding requires a sound business plan, and Super Bowl advertising is dominated by car, liquor, and clothing manufacturers. It's time for Web sites to get real, and we can't wait to see how they do it.
