NEC Joins the Ranks of Direct PC Sellers

Under NEC Now, you can pick up the phone and order a custom PC, including some new models.

As of Monday, August 4, NEC will become a direct vendor of PCs under the NEC Now program.

End-users will be able to pick up the phone and order any number of PCs or notebooks, directly or indirectly, customized or standard, from NEC, marking the latest option in the ever-changing landscape of PC sales.

A new product line that has been spawned from the NEC Now model is the Direction line of small-office/home-office PCs to be announced Monday.

Also to be announced Monday are new notebooks being built under the new program. Boasting the latest technologies, the NEC Versa 6060 and 2700 will take advantage of NEC Now to bring new features to market quickly, according to company officials.

The 6060 features a 166-MHz Pentium with MMX processor, a 12.1-inch active-matrix display, 16MB of RAM, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 20X CD-ROM or LS120 drive, full PC97 compliance including Universal Serial Bus, and DMI 2.0 compliance. Pricing begins at $3499.

The 2700 sports an all-in-one design with a 133- or 166-MHz Pentium with MMX, 12.1-inch active-matrix or dual-scan display, 1.44GB hard drive, and 56-kbps modem, for prices starting at $2399.

As for the Direction PC line, the Direction SPT 200 is priced at $1799, and comes with a 200-MHz Pentium Processor with MMX technology, 512KB cache, 32MB of Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM), a 3.2GB Ultra DMA hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive, a 15-inch NEC C550 monitor, a Number Nine Reality 334 video card, and Altec Lansing ACS-90 speakers.

The Direction SPT 233, listed at $1999, includes a 233-MHz Pentium with MMX technology, 512KB cache, 32MB of SDRAM, 4.3GB Ultra DMA hard drive, 24X CD-ROM drive, a 15-inch NEC C550 monitor, a Number Nine Reality 334 video card, and Altec Lansing ACS-90 speakers.

The Direction SPT 233, priced at $2399, has a 233-MHz Pentium with MMX technology, 512KB cache, 32MB of SDRAM, a 3.2GB Ultra DMA hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive, a 17-inch NEC C700 monitor, a Number Nine Revolution 3-D video card with 4MB of RAM, and Altec Lansing ACS-45 speakers with subwoofer.

The Direction SPT 233, at a cost of $2699, comes with Pentium MMX-233 processor, 512KB cache, 32MB of SDRAM, 4.3GB Ultra DMA hard drive, 24X CD-ROM drive, 17-inch NEC C700 monitor, Number Nine Revolution 3-D video card with 4MB of RAM, Altec Lansing ACS-45 speakers with subwoofer, an Iomega Zip drive, and a U.S. Robotics 56-kbps modem.

The Direction SPT 233, for $2899, consists of a Pentium MMX-233, 512KB cache, 64MB of SDRAM, 7.0GB Ultra DMA hard drive, 24X CD-ROM drive, 17-inch NEC C700 monitor, Number Nine Revolution 3-D video card, Altec Lansing ACS-45 speakers and subwoofer, Iomega Zip drive, and a U.S. Robotics 56-kbps modem.
