Digital music is making the move away from your PC. A deal between CD-burning software maker Roxio and music label EMI Group will enable users to legally download and "burn" EMI music onto CDs, the companies announced Tuesday.

Roxio's flagship product, Easy CD Creator 5, allows users to copy, or burn, digital music straight onto CDs. Roxio had said earlier in the year that it was approaching content owners to see how Roxio could become part of the digital music distribution chain.

"We're telling the record companies that we can add items to our software to make sure they get paid for downloads and CD burns," Roxio President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Gorog said in an interview last March.

Gorog said at the time that a key component to making projects like Duet (the subscription-based music distribution service being developed by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment) work is to keep music listening convenient for users.

"It's simply not enough to download a song into your PC and to just listen to it from there. We are big believers in the disk. Looking five years out, people will still have a very serious requirement to get digital media off of the hard drive and onto CD to make it portable. The CD will be replaced, but it will be replaced by DVDs [digital versatile discs]. It is important for Roxio to succeed in DVD recording," Gorog said.
