Number Nine%squots Revolution: Graphics Card for the Pros

The Revolution 3D combines the 3D features you see on gaming cards with 128-bit acceleration.

Number Nine%squots high-powered Imagine 128 graphics accelerator has been eclipsed by a faster, more affordable successor--the aptly named Revolution 3D. The Revolution 3D combines the kinds of 3D features you see on today%squots gaming cards with Number Nine%squots 128-bit acceleration. If you work with professional graphics programs or dabble in 3D modeling, the Revolution 3D%squots $299 price is right.

The PC World Test Center tested an early version of the Revolution 3D with beta drivers and found it to be the fastest board we%squotve seen at speeding up 2D programs. In addition, the board flawlessly played full-screen MPEG video clips at high resolutions.

However, 3D performance was mixed. While the Revolution 3D ran the Monster Truck Madness game as well as any we%squotve seen, it had trouble with alpha blending operations in Independence Day. We%squotve encountered a similar problem with several other cards, which we expect will be fixed by final versions of drivers.

All in all, though, you wouldn%squott buy this card just for games; better game cards can be had for less money. Where this board sets itself apart is with graphically intense applications.
