Crossfire: We%squotre More Compatible Than You Are, Says Gates

Microsoft%squots Gates takes issue with accusations that IE 4 is not compliant with Java and accuses Sun%squots McNealy of a bias against PCs.

The war of words between Sun and Microsoft over Java is only beginning. We reported earlier about the lawsuit Sun filed against Microsoft for allegedly breaching its contract and developing a nonstandard implementation of Java in Internet Explorer 4.

Microsoft%squots CEO Bill Gates fired back today. During a meeting in Switzerland he told reporters that Sun%squots claims are not factual; Microsoft is trying hard to be compatible. Gates said IE4 is more in compliance with the spec than Sun%squots products and those of other licensees.

Gates also accused Sun of being biased against personal computers. He said Sun%squots worried because PCs are becoming more powerful and taking over some of the tasks of Sun%squots workstation hardware.

According to Gates, %dquotThey have always hated PCs. They think PCs give people too much freedom, too much power.%dquot
