IBM Announces Dual-Processor IntelliStation M Pro Models

New workstations will run on Pentium II-233, -266, or -300 chips and can handle symmetric multiprocessing.

IBM today unveiled the third wave of machines in its M Pro workstation family. The new line is designed to be much meatier than the company%squots first M Pro series, according to Jay Barrett, worldwide product manager for IBM workstations.

The three new IntelliStation M Pro 6898 machines will run on Intel Pentium II-233, -266 or -300 chips. Aimed at technical, creative, scientific, and corporate markets, the workstations can be single- or dual-processor and allow for symmetric multiprocessing. Pricing will start at about $3500.

The two lower-end machines will come with Permedia2 graphics cards for running 2D and some 3D applications, while the top-end machine will have an Intergraph Intense3D Pro 2200/T card to handle more demanding 3D applications. All three workstations will have an Intel 440LX core chip set that supports Accelerated Graphics Port technology.

Each of the three 6898 workstations will come with 512K of L2 cache. The low-end 6898-10x will have 32MB of SDRAM, the middle model will have 64MB of SDRAM and the top-end model will have 128MB of SDRAM. Software bundled with the workstations will include Windows NT 4.0 as the preloaded operating system, as well as a license for Lotus Development%squots SmartSuite desktop applications.
