Backup Bonanza: Iomega Ditto Max

This affordable backup unit is ready to keep in step with tomorrow%squots hard drives.

Choosing the right capacity in a backup drive can seem as tough as picking lottery numbers. With hard drives jumping from an average of 2GB a year ago to 4GB today--and perhaps to 8GB next year--it%squots hard to choose an affordable backup unit that won%squott soon be outdated. Iomega has a novel solution with its new $199 Ditto Max and $299 Ditto Max Professional drives.

The Ditto Max%squots unique tray handles cartridges that hold up to 3GB, 5GB, or 7GB of compressed files; the Ditto Max Professional also accepts 10GB cartridges. The drives are available in parallel port or internal floppy-connect models for the same price. A 3GB cartridge for the Ditto Max drives costs $20, and you%squotll pay $26 for a 5GB tape, $30 for 7GB, and $35 for 10GB. This flexibility means you don%squott waste money: As your hard drive fills up, you can simply buy larger tapes.

Iomega also bundles a new version of Ditto Tools 1-Step backup software, which sets up a 125MB direct-access area at the start of each tape to archive frequently used files. The company says the internal models can transfer up to 36MB per minute when used with its $49 Ditto Dash card; the parallel port drives back up at 19MB per minute. Of course, neither model can match the 60MB-per-minute transfer rate of an EIDE or SCSI Travan-4 drive.
