Tiny Iomega Clik Drive Intended for Handheld Devices

Hitachi plans to provide Clik drive support in cameras.

In New York today, Iomega unveiled a new storage device for digital cameras, personal digital assistants, and handheld PCs.

The new Clik drive uses matchbook-size 40MB cartridges that will sell for about $10. The drive itself is expected to cost about $200 when it ships in mid-1998.

Iomega says the Clik drive will enable consumers to transfer large amounts of data between portable electronic devices and computers. An external version will ship first, which can be connected via a cable to a PC or a portable device. Hitachi was among the first companies to announce it will provide support for the external Clik drive in a new line of MPEG cameras.

Separately today, Iomega said has begun shipping a slimmed-down version of its Zip drive to notebook PC makers. The company said several OEMs will offer the 100MB removable disk drives in their notebooks, including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Micron, and NEC.

The 15mm-thick Zip drive will start showing up in portable PCs by the end of the year, with a 12.7mm version coming a bit later for use in ultrathin notebooks.
