Juno Takes Legal Action Against Spam-Slingers

Claims companies e-mailed advertising with forged Juno return addresses.

One of the Internet%squots biggest providers of free e-mail addresses also appears to many Internet users to be one of the Net%squots major sources of spam, or unsolicited commercial e-mail.

But today Juno Online Services said that it%squots taking legal action to cut down on spam--and to clear its good name in the process.

Juno said it has filed suit in federal court against five companies for sending tens of thousands of unsolicited commercial e-mails with forged juno.com return addresses. It contends that the spammers concealed their true Internet addresses to prevent being traced.

The New York-based online service wants an injunction and $1 million in punitive damages from each of the defendants. Juno argues that their forging of Juno addresses has hurt the company%squots reputation and also constitutes fraud and trademark infringement.

The five defendants are Strippers of Beverly Hills, California; IMS of Knoxville, Tennessee; Phoenix Interactive of Hermosa Beach, California; Global Information Services of Clearwater, Florida; and Scott Allen Export Sales of Somerset, New Jersey.
