Microsoft Ships IE4 for Sun Solaris

Acknowledges that IE5 beta has been seen surfing the Web.

Microsoft on Tuesday rounded out its platform support for Internet Explorer version 4. The company released IE4 for UNIX--specifically, for Sun Solaris version 2.5 and later.

While Microsoft is expected to release IE4 for other versions of UNIX in the future, the company says today%squots release completes its goal of making IE4 available on all popular operating systems. The company claims IE4 can run on 99.7 percent of all computer desktops in use today.

Does that mean the company will now turn its full attention to IE5? Some Web site operators have already reported seeing evidence of IE5 beta versions in their server logs. But product manager Craig Beilinson won%squott reveal Microsoft%squots plans for the next big revision of the browser.

Beilinson acknowledges the hints of IE5: %dquotWe have development teams at Microsoft working on future products, and [the operators] will see this in their logs.%dquot But he adds, %dquotWe%squotre not commenting on time frames. It%squots not something that we%squotre focusing on; right now, it%squots still IE4 and Windows 98.%dquot

Also on Monday, Microsoft posted on its Web site an Internet Explorer Resource Kit, a 1000-page document that provides technical information on the guts of IE4. You can download all or sections of the 18MB file free from Microsoft%squots site. Or you can order a bound printed version, which includes a CD-ROM, for $50.
