IBM Expands ThinkPad Line, Unveils Pentium II Aptiva
New ThinkPad models feature 233-MHz to 266-MHz Pentium MMX processors, 56-kbps modems.
The new ThinkPad 385XD and 380XD models feature a 233-MHz or 266-MHz Pentium MMX processor; 32MB of standard memory; 2MB of video RAM; integrated floppy drive, hard drive, and 10X-24X CD-ROM drive; stereo speakers; and a 12.1-inch thin film transistor or high-performance addressing display.
A 56-kbps PC Card modem comes with the 385XD and is an option with the 380XD. Pricing for both models begins at $2499.
The ThinkPad 310ED includes a Pentium MMX-166 processor, Level 2 cache, 32MB of RAM, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 12.1-inch DSTN screen, an 8X-20X CD-ROM drive, an ActionTec 56-kbps PC Card modem, MPEG-1 video playback, and Zoomed Video port support. Pricing begins at $1599.
The ThinkPad 560X features a Pentium MMX-200 processor, a 12.1-inch HPA screen, 32MB of RAM, and a 2.1GB hard drive. It is priced at $2499.
The new models, available now, are bundled with Lotus SmartSuite 97. The 385XD and the 310ED are sold through computer stores, including CompUSA, OfficeMax, and Staples; and the 380XD and the 560X are sold through IBM resellers.
The company also unveiled the Aptiva E76, the first model of the Aptiva E series to feature a Pentium II processor. The new model is available now in the United States and will be rolled out worldwide in the next few months. The E76 features a 300-MHz Pentium II processor, 64MB of RAM, an 8GB hard drive, 24X CD-ROM drive, a K56flex modem, 512KB of Level 2 cache, 4MB of SGRAM, and SRS 3D sound. Pricing begins at $1799.
