IBM Unveils 6.4GB Notebook Hard Drive
Travelstar 6GT designed for ultrathin notebook PCs; headed for new ThinkPads and Dell%squots Inspiron, Latitude lines.
The slim hard drive is about the size of a deck of playing cards, according to IBM officials. The Travelstar 6GT uses %dquotGiant Magnetoresistive%dquot heads. The new drive is 12.5mm high, fitting into drive bays for thin-and-light notebooks, unlike the 17mm, 8.1GB notebook drive announced earlier this year.
The 6GT also comes in a 5.4GB version. IBM said that the two drives the first in a forthcoming series of Travelstar drives.
Dell Computer is already planning to offer the drive on its Inspiron and Latitude lines in the first half of this year, and IBM will offer it in its ThinkPads.
