Price Down, Quality Up on 17-inch Monitors
Price drops below $600 for half the models on upcoming Top 10 chart.
Although 17-inch monitor prices have not dropped as steeply as desktop PC prices, monitors are becoming steadily cheaper. Half of the monitors on the May chart cost less than $600, with the $469 Samsung SyncMaster 700b leading the charge. Sporting a 15.7-inch viewable area, fine display of both text and graphics, and an overall rating of 85, the SyncMaster 700b trails the number-one ranked monitor by merely three points.
The $559 Compaq V75 and the $685 Televideo SVP270 SuperView Pro Series debut on the May chart. Although both newcomers share very good text quality and an overall score of 83, the SVP270 SuperView%squots fantastic graphics give it a graphics rating of Excellent, compared to Compaq%squots Very Good rating. But with the same overall score, a lower price and longer support hours, we still consider the Compaq a better buy than the Televideo.
