3Com to Upgrade V.90 Code for Courier Modems

Also available: upgrades to V.90 from V.34.

3Com on Thursday confirmed that it plans to ship V.90 firmware updates for its Courier modems next week.

Daryle Brown, 3Com%squots manager of global product marketing, said the company will release the code on its Web site Monday, March 23.

The upgrade to the V.90 international standard will be free for owners of Courier x2 modems. Courier V.34 modem users can upgrade to V.90 for $60.

Brown said initial testing with V.90 shows slight performance improvements over x2 when connecting to V.90 servers. Few ISPs have upgraded to V.90, but 3Com promises that the new firmware will be backward-compatible, so that Courier users can access servers running either V.90 or x2.

But as we recently reported, some 3Com Sportster owners who upgraded to V.90 have encountered low connect rates. The company says servers using outdated x2 firmware are responsible for the problem. Brown said testing of the Courier V.90 product showed no susceptibility to this bug.
