Sun%squots Java Station NC to Ship Thursday

Long-anticipated network computer to sell for $699; plans for a mobile Java system in the works.

As expected and in a very low-key manner, Sun Microsystems finally announced commercial availability of its oft-delayed Java Station network computer, as well as a deal to work on a mobile version of the device with Toshiba.

In the Tuesday announcement at the JavaOne conference, Sun said the highly anticipated Java Station would be available Thursday for a price of $699.

Allied Signal and PHP Healthcare are already signed up to use the new devices. PHP has 40 installed and plans 460 more installations, while Allied did not specify its plans for the Java Station.

Additionally, Sun announced plans to work on a mobile NC with Toshiba, the current leader in mobile PC sales. Both companies were quick to point out that the %dquotcollaboration effort is based on a nonbinding memorandum of understanding that is subject to further negotiation and the closing of a definitive agreement.%dquot

Toshiba already has a network computer, called the Confolio, available in Japan.

Sun also announced that it is shipping its Netra J 2.0 administration software for support of Java Station network computers.
