Quantum Trumpets 500GB Tape Technology
Quantum expects to sell 100GB to 500GB tapes with up to 40MB-per-second transfer rates by next year.
The company announced Monday that it expects to use the technologies in new tape storage products with capacities of 100GB to 500GB and transfer rates of 10MB to 40MB per second. The new products will allow a large company to store a financial database on one tape cartridge, the company said.
As a follow-up to Quantum%squots current architecture, called DLTtape, the enhanced version will be called Super DLTtape and will be backward-compatible with the DLT 7000 and DLT 4000 storage systems. The first Super DLTtape product is expected to ship in the middle of next year, Quantum said.
The DLTtape systems combine a media cartridge and a tape drive and handle backup, archiving, and disaster recovery for midrange servers.
