New Cyrix Chip Has Celeron in Its Sights

Company claims its M II-300 chip is 25 percent faster than Intel%squots 266-MHz Celeron claims.

Cyrix today announced the M II-300 processor, a Windows-compatible chip designed to compete against Intel%squots forthcoming Celeron chip in the entry-level PC market.

Cyrix maintained in a statement today that the M II-300, pronounced %dquotem two,%dquot is 25 percent faster than Intel%squots 266MHz Celeron chip. The M II-300 will be available to computer makers at the end of April for $180 in quantities of 1000, the statement said.

The M II-300%squots speed and pricing are designed to convince PC makers and resellers to incorporate the chip into their products, especially entry-level PCs in the sub-$1000 price range, the statement said. According to the statement, Cyrix has lined up hardware makers and resellers who plan to deliver systems based on the new chip, but Cyrix did not name the companies.
