Lycos to Expand Directory Services

Acquisition to make Lycos the only integrated directory/search service online, company says.

Internet search service Lycos has acquired WiseWire, which uses proprietary technology to build directories on the Internet, for nearly $40 million in Lycos shares.

The WiseWire technology will be integrated into Lycos%squots online service, Lycos said in a statement today. Lycos%squots new integrated search results page will list categories found in WiseWire%squots directory, with links to top Web sites as ranked by Web users. That listing will be followed by sites found by the Lycos Web spider that match the search criteria.

The deal makes Lycos the only online service to have an automated Web directory integrated with Internet search results, according to Lycos.

Various top WiseWire executives will move into new jobs at Lycos. Ken Lang, developer of WiseWire%squots proprietary technology, will become Lycos%squots chief technology officer. Dennis Ciccone, WiseWire president, will become vice president of mergers and acquisitions. Robert Frasca, WiseWire senior vice president, will become a Lycos vice president.
