FTC Antitrust Action Against Intel Rumored

Commission also seeking public comment on Internet consumer protection.

Intel may be the next target of government regulators. The Federal Trade Commission is reportedly readying an antitrust case against Intel that could be filed as soon as next month. According to Business Week, the FTC is investigating, among other things, the issue of whether the chip maker illegally used its monopoly to retaliate against two customers, Digital Equipment and Intergraph. Both sued Intel for patent infringement, and then found their supplies of chips and technical information cut off by Intel.

Separately, the FTC is asking for public input on how federal consumer-protection laws should apply to advertising and transactions on the Internet. The commission says it is formulating a formal policy statement and wants to clear up any uncertainty about whether offline rules should apply to electronic media such as the Net, e-mail, and CD-ROMs.

The FTC has set up a special e-mail address for comments. You'll find more information on the News Radio related-links page for today.
