Newest Accounting Packages for Small Business

Intuit%squots QuickBooks Pro adds multiuser tools; Peachtree Office Accounting now features built-in Net browsing.

Intuit QuickBooks is popular with small businesses, but using the software to share data among employees has always been a challenge. Now, with QuickBooks Pro 6.0, up to five users can access accounting data simultaneously over a network. Only one person at a time can change a particular piece of information, such as an invoice, though others can view it.

QuickBooks is still easy to use, and an on-screen video explains the numerous accounting procedures. Both the $219 QuickBooks Pro 6.0 and its $119 sibling, QuickBooks 6.0, link to useful Internet resources, such as tools for finding the best loans and credit.

Peachtree%squots Office Accounting bookkeeping program lets you easily import and export information in Excel and Word formats. Navigation aids--flowcharts that show the processing path for accounting functions such as receivables and payables--simplify operating the program. And a built-in version of Microsoft%squots Internet Explorer provides access to Web links. Instead of printing them out, you can place financial reports in Microsoft Exchange or Outlook folders, though only one employee on the network can see them at a time.
