Philips PCRW2010
WHAT'S HOT: The $120 Philips PCRW2010 displayed excellent CD-R and CD-RW write times for a drive of its speed class. It took 4 minutes, 31 seconds to write 650MB to CD-R on the fly, and 1 second less than that to write the same data from an image file. With a digital audio extraction time of 1 minute, 39 seconds for 320MB of audio tracks and a time of 3 minutes, 7 seconds to install the first disc of Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition, this drive posted some of the best CD-ROM read performance results we've seen for a 20X drive.
WHAT'S NOT: The drive comes with great instructions, but the printed quick-start guide is fairly basic and you'll need to refer to the installation CD for more details.
WHAT ELSE: Philips provides a one-year warranty for its drive, as well as toll-free technical support for 11 hours daily on weekdays and 8 hours daily on weekends. Seven-day support is uncommon among CD-RW drive vendors.
UPSHOT: Delivering fast CD-R write speeds and application-installation times, this moderately priced drive is well suited to business use, and the maker's daily support hours make it attractive for weekend use at home.
