Samsung SW-216
WHAT'S HOT: A fast CD-R writer for its speed class, the Samsung SW-216 posted topflight results, taking just 5 minutes, 29 seconds to write our 650MB folder of files to CD-R. It also did a good job of writing our 100MB folder of files to CD-RW using packet writing: The drive required 1 minute, 19 seconds to complete this task. The documentation accompanying the drive is both useful and clearly written.
WHAT'S NOT: The SW-216's CD-ROM read performance was mixed. The drive scored among the upper third of all the models in our current crop at installing the first disc of Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition, but it placed in the bottom third at extracting 320MB of audio files.
WHAT ELSE: Samsung provides a one-year warranty and 10-hour daily weekday toll-free support. The software bundle includes Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and InCD 2.11.
UPSHOT: One of the least-expensive drives on the market, Samsung's 16X drive features strong performance at a bargain price.
