WHAT'S HOT: Best known as an OEM supplier of peripherals such as CD-RW drives, Taiwanese manufacturer Lite-On is now marketing its CD-RW drives under its own name in the U.S. market. The 24x10x40x LTR-24102B's speedy performance is typical for its class: It took 4 minutes, 31 seconds to write our 650MB folder of files to CD-R, and 1 minute, 19 seconds to write our 100MB folder of files to CD-RW using packet writing.
WHAT'S NOT: The LTR-24102B lacks documentation beyond an installation poster that consists of illustrations and a succinct list of seven steps. Lite-On's technical support is available only on weekdays for 9 hours daily, and the call is not toll-free.
WHAT ELSE: The 24x10x40x LTR-24102B uses the same drive mechanism as the CenDyne Lightning 24x10x40x. However, we saw some performance differences in our tests: Lite-On's drive took 20 seconds longer than CenDyne's to complete our CD-R writing tests. On the other hand, the Lite-On was 15 seconds faster on our digital audio extraction test.
The LTR-24102B has a one-year warranty and ships with Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and InCD 2.26.
UPSHOT: If you don't need hand-holding during installation or support after business hours, this speedy, inexpensive Lite-On model could meet your needs.
