Symantec Program Ensures Virus-Free Content on the Internet

Certification benefits Web masters, surfers alike.

Are you safe surfing?

Symantec announced this week a program for promoting virus awareness and virus-free content on the Internet. Its new Protect Your Site program lets Web sites show that they are running real-time background virus-protection using one of Symantecs line of anti-virus products, including Norton Anti-Virus 95, Norton Anti-Virus NT, and Symantec Anti-Virus for Macintosh.

%dquotNortonProtect Your Site runs on your Windows 95 or NT or Mac Web server and detects the presence and status of Symantec anti-virus software. Sites running real-time protection display a time-stamped certification logo notifying users that the Web server is being constantly scanned for virus infections. When certification has expired and virus definitions need to be updated, it notifies Web masters and users alike.

According to John Moldenhauer, director of the Symantec certification program, %dquotThe Protect Your Site program is an attempt to be proactive about virus threat on the Internet. A lot of end-users dont understand the dangers that are out there. Were trying to increase awareness and help users feel more secure that the information theyre downloading off the Net is virus-free.%dquot

Symantecs anti-virus products do not currently scan for harmful Java applets and ActiveX viruses, although Moldenhauer said that the capability is built into the Auto-Protect feature of Norton Anti-Virus and that Symantec will have a product ready when the demand is there.

The Protect Your Site application is free from Symantecs Web site.
