IBM to License Java, HotJava, Move Closer to Sun

New Tricks for OS/2 Warp 4.

IBM today will announce an expanded relationship with Sun Microsystems Inc., part of which includes licensing the Java operating system and HotJava browser, said IBM officials.

%dquotWe already have Java licenses,%dquot said an IBM Europe spokesman today. %dquotI imagine [the Java operating system and HotJava] will be used in the Network Station, so that there are no limitations to what we can do [with Network Station],%dquot the spokesman said. IBM will hold a teleconference to announce details of the agreement with Sun today at 9:30 a.m. in California, the official said.

HotJava is a World Wide Web browser that allows access to Java sites. HotJava can retrieve Java applets, then run them on any client machine.

The Java operating system can run with as little as 512K bytes of ROM and 128 bytes of RAM, according to Sun officials. IBM%squots use of Sun%squots Java technology to date includes:

  • A joint-development deal with Sun and Planetworks that allows users to take applications based on IBM%squots CICS mainframe query system, Encina and MQ Series and make them available over the Internet.
  • Java technology incorporated in OS/2 Warp 4. This lets applications and applets written in Java run independent of a Web browser.
  • Ports of the Java Virtual Machine to MVS, OS/400, OS/2, AIX and Windows 3.1.
  • Plans to include native Java support in OS/400 next year.
  • Development of a VisualAge tool suite to support software development in Java.

IBM%squots Java World Wide Web site can be found at http://www.ibm.com/Java.
