Microsoft to Add Java Support to IE for Windows 3.1
Beats Netscape to the chase in delivering support for 16-bit Java.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson, although Netscape has announced support for Java running on Windows 3.1, Microsoft is the first to demonstrate this support.
Still, users of Windows 3.1 will have to wait till December for Microsoft to release a beta of Java support for IE for Windows 3.1. At that time, all versions of IE 3.0 (Macintosh, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95/NT) will include Java support.
Microsoft will provide an add-on for IE 3.0 that will allow Windows 3.1 users to run Java applets, saving users the trouble of upgrading to a new version of the browser.
The move follows Microsoft%squots announcement earlier this week that it%squots posted a beta for Internet Explorer 3.0 for Macinstosh, which also includes Java support.
