Bottom Line

Gladiac 511

ELSA Gladiac 511

WHAT'S HOT: The ELSA Gladiac 511 performs similarly to other 64MB GeForce2 MX-400-based boards, and it carries a reasonable price of $129. It also comes with an S-Video-out port and an S-Video/composite adapter cable. The board showed very good lighting and color in our test games, and the moments that looked overly bright could be adjusted easily.

WHAT'S NOT: The extra RAM doesn't provide any performance boost over 32MB MX-400 boards; it only lets you play at 1600 by 1200 resolution, albeit slowly. For example, in Quake 3 at 1600 by 1200, we saw only 21 frames per second. And during our Test Drive 6 evaluation, we noticed some minor hesitations.

WHAT ELSE: ELSA bundles a color-calibration utility as well their DVD software, ELSAmovie2000. You can play games on an attached TV, but only at a maximum resolution of 1024 by 768. ELSA includes two games with the Gladiac 511: Pro Rally 2001 and Ultima Online Renaissance. The company provides toll-free phone support during weekdays.

UPSHOT: Games look good when played on the Gladiac 511, and the board performs similarly to other GeForce2 MX-400 boards, but it costs a bit more than 32MB versions.
