IBM Rolls Out New Aptivas

High-end model features a Pentium II 450-MHz processor; midrange unit is built around AMD's new K6-2 350-MHz chip.

IBM today rolled out two new models in its Aptiva line of PCs aimed at the consumer market, one for the high end and one for the midrange.

The Aptiva SE7 is a high-end PC powered by Intel's Pentium II 450-MHz processor and priced at $2399 without monitor, according to IBM. The SE7 contains a 16.8GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM drive, a 56-kbps modem, and software including IBM Via Voice, Lotus SmartSuite, and Norton Antivirus. In addition, the SE7 offers expandability options through three open slots and two open bays, IBM said. Along with the system itself, IBM is also offering a choice of monitors, sold separately: a compact 15-inch flat-panel display, or a 19-inch CRT monitor.

The other new model, the Aptiva E4N, features Advanced Micro Devices' K6-2 350-MHz processor and is slated to sell for $1299 without monitor, IBM said. The Aptiva E4N offers an 8GB hard drive, 64MB of SDRAM, and graphics powered by the ATI Rage Pro Turbo 2X AGP.

Both systems are available in retail stores and directly from IBM.
